Learning versus education

Ran across this great quote attributed to Albert Einstein today:

“Learning is not a product of schooling but the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” -Albert Einstein

It showed up in an interesting article about the future of education — and whether the web is up to replacing it.

While the author generally concludes that it won’t, he does review some interesting experiments in online, extra-institutional education that are making a real difference in the lives of some.

Journalism isn’t the only thing undergoing a revolution. As the piece notes in its closing quote, perhaps the best we can do is struggle to keep an open mind:

The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise — with the occasion.

-Abraham Lincoln, December 1, 1862
